2 The Golden Poppy The California Quail
California's state flower is the Golden Poppy. It is a wild flower that is native to the United States and Mexico. Its scientific name is Eschscholtzia californica. The California Quail The state bird is the California Quail. They are a beautiful gray, round bird.

3 The Golden State California's official nickname is The Golden State. This name was given appropriately after the Gold Rush in The state was rich with gold which invited new settlers throughout the country. The name also comes from all the Golden Poppies you can find during the spring and summer time.

4 A California Republic The California state flag was designed by William Todd. Todd was the nephew of Abraham Lincoln's wife, Mary Todd Lincoln. It was first raised in Sonoma, California in It was adopted as the official flag in 1911.

The California Redwood trees are the tallest trees on Earth! Our local trees can grow over 300 feet. Some redwoods have been around for 2,000 years! You can see these trees while driving through Santa Cruz and the Highway 1.
