State Capital- Sacramento Postal Code- CA Total Area-163,707 square miles Borders- Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, Pacific Ocean Longitude- 114° 8' W to 124° 24' W Latitude- 32° 30' N to 42° N It is 770 miles long and 250 miles wide. The geographic center of California is located 38 miles east of Madera.

5 Geography The third largest state in the U.S. 7,734 square miles of California is covered by water. The highest point in California is Mt. Whitney at 14,494 feet. The lowest point in California is in the Death Valley. The mean elevation of California is 2,900 feet above sea level. Its major rivers include the Sacramento, Colorado, and San Joaquin. Its major lakes include Lake Tahoe, Salton Sea, Owens lake, and Searles Lake. Its coastline runs 840 miles long.

6 Economics State Governor- Jerry Brown The 2011 Budget Act of California funds $64.1 billion to the K-12 education programs. The Proposition 98 guarantees minimum funding levels for the K-12 school and community colleges. The Guarantee for the Proposition 98 is exactly $48.7 billion. An increase of $578.1 million ensures that the Guarantee does not decrease with the shift in motor vehicle fuel revuenes.

7 Economics An increase of $221.8 million reflects the inclusion of mental health and out-of-home care services within the Guarantee. A decrease of $1.134 billion reflects the exclusion of child care programs, except part-day preschool programs from Proposition 98. A decrease of $1.7 billion ensures the total Guarantee does not change as a result of new local revenue related to redevelopment agencies. Proposition 98 decreased by $2.1 billion as a result to the reduction of General fund sales tax revenue for the realignment of public safety programs to counties.

8 Economics Defer $2.1 billion to K-12 education spending. Decrease $62.3 billion to part-day state preschool. Adjustments to the Budget: Shift in Mental Health services from counties to schools; New charter schools ( $11 million to provide); Clean technology and renewable energy training (an increase of $3.2 million); Extension of flexibility for K-12 School Districts. Adopted solutions: Eliminate the Office of the Secretary of Education and decrease $180.4 million to child care and development programs.

10 History Date when the state entered the union- September 9, 1850. The 31 st state in the United States. California became a Republic from Mexico on June 14, 1846. The grizzly bear symbolizes great strength. The lone star refers to the lone Star of Texas. The flag was adopted in 1911.

12 The name California came from a knightly romance book that was published in 1510. The first settlers to arrive in California were the Spanish. Later on the Mexicans. The Spanish were sent to California to convert the Indians to Christianity. Spain and England fought for the state of California because England did not want Spain to own more land in the New World. The mission period in California lasted only about 60 years.

13 History The earthquake of 1812 destroyed the missions in Southern California. At the beginning, Mexico had power of California’s political powers. In 1849, California came from obscurity to statehood because of the Gold Rush. In 1848, gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill. President Fillmore made California the 31 st state because of the discovery of gold. In 1861, telegraph lines stretched across the country bringing California out of isolation. The transcontinental railroad helped linked California to the rest of the nation in May of 1868.

14 History California’s Central Valley is know as the breadbasket of the world. California’s mild climate allows year-round farming whereas other areas may not. California’s produce was a great demand in the East. California’s agriculture is responsible for the state’s wealth.
