1 Renaissance Connection
What is the connection between the Renaissance and Humanism and the Scientific Revolution?

2 Scientific Revolution Redoux
What do you see?

3 Up until the 1500’s, scientific thought was based on ancient ideas like…

4

5

6 Classical Effects As Greek and Roman classics were studied, many believed that the classicists had already learned everything BUT THEN…

7 Shift in Thinking

8 Scientific Revolution Begins
Like most major movements of history, it is difficult to find an exact date when the Scientific Revolution began Most usually agree that it all started with Copernicus…

9 Copernicus’ Theory The sun was fixed, and the earth and all planets moved around it (the Heliocentric Theory) Stars did not move; the apparent movement of stars was caused by the earth’s rotation He published these ideas in a book called On the Revolution of the Heavenly Spheres, released in 1543

11 Brahe and Kepler Kepler provided mathematical proof that the Heliocentric Theory works based on Brahe’s data He also discovered that it needed refinement, and he published his own ideas 3 Laws of Planetary Motion Orbits of the planets are not round, but elliptical Planets do not move at a uniform speed while in their orbits The time it takes for a planet to orbit the sun is directly proportional to the distance of that planet from the sun (closer planets orbit faster)

12 Brahe and Kepler
