2. What’s the Point?
One of our goals in this class is to become lifelong learners. One of the best ways to do this is to develop a love for reading. While we read many whole-class books throughout the school year, it is important that we branch out and explore our own interests when it comes to reading.
Reader’s Workshop allows us to do just that. Throughout the year, in addition to our regular class reading, you will be reading books independently. These are books that you will choose, based on your own interests.

3. What Do I Need to Know?
For each marking period, you are expected to read one book of your choice.
Before reading the book, be sure to share the title and author with me.
As you read, you will log the place, time, and pages read in each sitting. You will do this in your Reader’s Workshop Log; This log is important to reflect and discover who you are as a reader.

4. What Do I Need to Do?
As a means of sharing your book and what you’ve learned, you will create a project for your book that highlights the important aspects and what you took away from it.
Your book project will be due at the end of each, at a determined date (projects may be turned in earlier).
Choose your project from the attached Getting Creative: Our Outside Reading Tasks; or create your own idea and run it by me.
Each project idea may only be used ONCE throughout the school year.

5. What If I Want to Read More?
You are always encouraged to read above and beyond what is expected!!
You may submit up to two additional book projects for extra credit each marking period.

6. What If I Can’t Find a Book?
I have created a classroom library with a variety of great books, many of which are my personal property. I would love nothing more than to share these wonderful books with all of you! In return, I expect each classroom library book to be returned and treated with respect, just as you would want your own possessions treated.
I encourage you to take advantage of the classroom library for your Reader’s Workshop independent reading, as there are many fresh, new, young-adult titles from which to choose! Please talk to your classmates or me if you need book recommendations.
The classroom library procedures are as follows:
You may sign out one book at a time.
Fill out each column of the “Classroom Library Sign-Out Sheet”
Make sure you get me to initial the sheet when you return the book!
Any book signed out in your name and is not returned will be your responsibility to replace.
Please let me know if there are any exceptional titles that our classroom library is lacking, and I will do my best to include them on the shelves in the future !
