Three to four major novel studies will be required for the year. Ex: To Kill a Mockingbird, Animal Farm, The Odyssey, Romeo and Juliet.

Grading English I is weighted as a high school class with the following emphasis: Major Writing Assignments 35% Tests: 35% All other assignments 30% (Quizzes, homework, classwork, journals etc…) *Homework assignments will account for 30% of a student’s grade!

Grading English I students are working toward earning a high school credit. English I accreditation is based on: 1st Quarter Grade: 20% 2nd Quarter Grade: 20% 3rd Quarter Grade: 20% 4th Quarter Grade: 20% End of Course Exam: 20% 100 %

Grading English I students must maintain a 77% average or higher to remain in the Honors program. Student progress will be monitored closely and evaluated each Interim and Quarter grading period. If students fall below the 77%, a conference will be held with the teacher, parents, student, and guidance/administration to determine the best course of action.

Class Novel Studies: Complete between three to four class novels a year. Majority of the reading is done outside of the class. Students will be expected to discuss and analyze their reading in class. Novel Study grades will come from classwork, reading checks, writing assignments, quizzes, tests, and novel based projects.

Independent Reading Students are still be expected to keep up with independent reading while working on class novels. Independent reading requires a reading log with journal entries that include a summary as well as a prediction. The goal is to encourage students to explore their own interests and foster a love for reading.

Writing Like reading assignments, a majority of writing assignments will be done outside of the classroom. Student/Teacher conferences will be available to provide one-on-one time with students to discuss their writing and provide feedback.

Projects Critical thinking projects, textual based projects, creative thinking projects. Students will use research in some projects and will be expected to support their findings and cite their sources. Approximately three to four projects throughout the school year.

Summer Reading Rising 8th grade English I students will read: To Kill a Mockingbird To Kill a Mockingbird will be the first Novel Unit when students return in the Fall. A major writing assignment will be given on the 3rd day of school concerning the summer reading.
