1 Carrollton Elementary School Media Center Orientation
Welcome! We are going to learn information about the media center, take a tour, and learn how to check out books.

2 Media Center Information Hours: Monday – Friday 7:30-3:30 Staff: Margaret Bray, Media Specialist Brenda Hannon, Media Assistant Gena Little, Media Assistant

3 Check Out Information Pre-K – 2nd grade students: 1 book for 1 week
3rd grade students: 2 books for 1 week

4 Paperback & Read Aloud Area
This is the Easy paperback area. Pre-K students can only check out from this area, but everyone can visit this area. It is organized by author’s last name. Teachers can do read-alouds on the rug and students can sit on the rug to read books they have checked out.

5 Easy Fiction Area

6 Teacher Resource Area This is the Teacher Resource Area. Only teachers can visit this area. There are DVDs/VHS, flannel board stories, listening center kits, big books, and professional materials for teachers in this area.

7 Non-Fiction Area This is the non-fiction area of the media center. All the books housed in this area are true. These books are organized by the Dewey Decimal System. There are labels on the shelves and on the end of the shelves to help you understand the Dewey system.

8 Fiction Chapter Books This is the Fiction (not true) chapter book area of the media center. The hardback books are located on the shelves along the perimeter of this side of the media center. The paperback chapter books are located on 3 racks. All of the books are organized in ABC order by author’s last name.

9 This is the center of the Media Center
This is the center of the Media Center. There is a Promethean Board available for teachers to use.

10 Reference Area Around the perimeter of the table area of the media center is the reference materials. The atlas are all located on one shelf.

11 Circulation Desk This is the heart of the media center – the circulation desk. This is where you go to return or check out materials. It is also where someone will be if you have questions while visiting the media center.

12 Step 1: Step 2: Return your book in the return slot
Get a stick from the box Now Ava is going to show you how to check out materials from the media center. The 1st step is to return any materials you might have already had. The 2nd step is to get a stick from the box on the desk.

13 Look for a book. ALWAYS use your stick!
Step 3: Look for a book. ALWAYS use your stick! The next step is to go on your search. Once you find a book you think you might want to check out, but your stick right where the book is. If you decide not to check out the book, place it right were it came from. Which is were your stick is!

14 Step 4: Take your book to the Circulation Desk to get it checked out
The final step is to check out your book. Take the book to the circulation desk. You will tell whoever is checking books out your first and last name. You should also have a media card from your teacher. Give your book and card to whoever is at the desk. Once they have checked your book out you can return to your classroom.
