1 Career & Technology Education
Casework Presented by Jim Broich AWILL Career & Technology Education Module 12

2 Room 46 Bookcases Locate Floor Plan and Elevation
Floor Plan – Pg 1 Elevation – Pg 5 List number of 36-inch bookcases needed Develop List of Materials (White Melamine) Sides Tops and Bottoms Shelves Backs (1/4-inch) PVC edge banding 2 X 4 ladder base stock Locate the Cost sheet for Bookcases in the back of your handbook. In the Tool Tall Towers building, find Room 46 on the floor plan, and determine the number of 36-inch bookcases in the room. Presenter verify with attendees the following quantities of parts: ANSWER: 25 bookcases; 50 sides; 50 tops and bottoms; 125 shelves; and 25 backs List the PVC edging by number of pieces and the 2x4 studs required for base. ANSWER: PVC 50 pcs 7ft; 50 pcs 3ft; and 125 pcs 3ft; STUDS 25 LF; Jacks 40 ea. Instructor says list the quantity and size for the items, and add to the Costing Sheet Target time = 5 minutes usually

3 Get Number of SHEETS Based on 4 x 8 How many lineal feet of 2 x 4?
. . . How many for sides? . . . How many for tops and bottoms? . . . How many for shelves? . . . How many for backs? How many lineal feet of 2 x 4? Convert your quantity of parts to number of sheets required for each. Total the PVC edging and the lineal footage of 2x4 studs. Fill in material placement costs in cost sheet. Target Time =

4 Price the Materials Fill in the quantity for each type of sheet
Look up cost of material Apply overhead Develop material cost Fill in quantities and costs in Bookcase worksheet. The instructor can remind attendees that the material cost sheet is included in the packet. The percentage for overhead is developed for our examples remember to calculate your own when you return to the plant. Target Time = 3 mins.

5 Spot Check Table Captains Do We NEED more Waste Factor?
Report your table consensus on the total developed price for materials Do We NEED more Waste Factor? Presenter needs to explain that the ‘developed’ cost includes 28% for overhead. No additional waste factor is required as we calculated the number of sheets.

6 Calculate Labor Costs - 200
Cut, machine and assemble 36-inch modules with dowel construction Section 200 200 and 250 Open your cost book to section 200, find the operations for 200 and 250. As the operation 200 is calculated by the sq ft, figure the square footage of the sheets of material and calculate the hours required. Total the lineal footage of edge-banding and calculate the hours. The next slide is a spot check and will not be noted in your handbook.

7 Spot Check Table Captains
Report your table consensus for hours required to cut sheet stock Report your hours for edge-banding ANSWER: 8 hours - cutting ANSWER: 2.4 hours - edge-banding

8 Calculate Labor Costs - 400
Section 400 Drill for dowels Drill for adjustable shelf holes Groove parts for backs Insert dowels Case clamp assembly Note special condition Turn to Cost book section 400; find the operations and determine labor hours required. Add up the total labor for all bookcases. Time - 7 mins.

9 Spot Check Table Captains
Report your table consensus for total labor hours required for complete fabrication. Presenter requests labor hours from Table Captains. Our answer is 63.7 hours There are two aspects of these bookcases that do not meet the AWI Quality Standards for this project. If you know what they are, save your answer for tomorrow, there may be a great prize in your future. ANSWER: 1) Bookcase shelving needs to be 1” thick for spans over 32” - in QSI8, 400-G-8; 2) Structural lumber for toe-kick is not recommended in QSI8, 400 A-T-1.

10 Summary Bookcases Notice the layout of the Cost Book sections
The labor hours provided are a consensus of AWI members to give you an average. When you return, look at your own cost reports and fill in your own plant labor hours. Does everyone have a total cost for bookcases?
