How were slaves acquired?
African rulers seized captives and brought them to coastal trading posts to sell for European items
Slave trade > prosperous business

5. African Leaders Resist
African leaders tried to slow down transatlantic slave trade

Wanted a more Christian state
Also wanted to end slave trade
System that supported slave trade too strong

6. New African States Arise
New states waged war over the domination of slave trade

Claimed his right to rule came from heaven > united his people
Built an efficient bureaucracy
Managed monopolies > gold & slave trade
