Bundle 4: water, solubility, and ph

Warm up In your IAN Notebooks, DRAW an example of the 3 methods to increase the Rate of Dissolving. Underneath each drawing EXPLAIN each method in detail. Be prepared to share with the class.

What is solubility? Solubility is the MAXIMUM amount of solute that will dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a specified temperature and pressure. For chemicals that are soluble, there is a limit to how much of the substance will dissolve. This limit is known as the solubility. The units of solubility are generally expressed in units of concentration, grams of solute per 100 grams of solvent.

Solubility problem What is the maximum amount of KCl that can be dissolved in 100 grams of water at 30ºC?

Solubility problem At what temperature can 60 grams of NH4Cl be dissolved in 100 grams of water?

Solubility problem How many grams of KNO3 can be dissolved in 100 grams of water at 50ºC? How many grams of KNO3 can be dissolved in 200 grams of water at 50ºC?

Solubility problem At 90°C, how many grams of water is needed to dissolve 20 grams of NH3?

Summarize your notes!

ASsignment Work Problems 6, 13, 14 (change 90° to 80°), 15, & 18 on your Solubility Curve Worksheet. Raise your hand when finished. The rest of the problems are homework!
