2 Background Changing world of work – due to economic, political, technological changes, re-organization of production & management practices - decentralization, delocalization, subcontracting, outsourcing, small sized factories with core workforce, etc) Nature of employment: precarious jobs, shift from regular-full time employee to temporary/contractual/ part time – disguised employment relationships Changing terms of employment pose challenges for unions - organizing, collective bargaining, social protection systems - undermine labour standards, aims of the labour laws & years of TUs struggles for workers rights

3 Background Need for reforms of labour laws to –
take into account changing employment relationships Deal effectively with issues like discrimination, promote equal opportunities, balance employment flexibility with the need for social protection of workers, Ensure FoA, organizing & collective bargaining rights as also right to company information support promotion of Decent Work for all workers

4 Objectives Promoting the understanding of the trade unions on the impact of globalization and economic reforms on labour laws, workers rights and labour relations systems; Develop understanding on how ILO standards can help promote national policy for protection of workers in diverse employment relationships and promote Decent Work for all workers; Strengthen national trade union capacities for advocacy and to take informed actions to influence labour law reforms, labour relations and promote Decent Work for all workers;

The world of work & key issues for Trade Unions in A-P Evolution of work and labour relations Country Reviews: Current trends in employment, labour law and industrial relations in Asia-Pacific The Role and Themes of the Japanese Labour Movement Labour law & International Labour Standards (ILS) Labour law and regulation of employment relations in Asian countries 'Japanese Labour Law and Unions Responses Employment Relationships, labour law & ILO Recommendation No.198 Trade Union Responses to precarious employment Major challenges for TUs in promotion of Decent Work in A-P Development of follow up action plans

6 Main Outputs Expected Each participant will prepare a follow up work plan in the area of labour law reforms, ILO standards and strengthening of their union capacities for promotion of decent work This work plan will be used for evaluation purposes and future follow up activities. Guidelines for preparing follow up proposal will be given

7 Evaluation Feedback is welcome on daily-basis
End of the workshop evaluation Post- workshop evaluation to be conducted one year after the completion of the workshop Feedback is welcome on daily-basis
