2 Understand the poem: 1. These words are repeated. The meaning of: ‘charter’d’ as used in lines 1 and 2 means mapped out, contained, controlled. In line 3, the meaning of ‘mark’ is a verb for notice, he is a keen observer of his city and people but in line 4, ‘marks’ is a noun meaning signs of – almost like branding something. 2. “in every face” 3.
