1 Speed, Distance, Velocity & Acceleration

2 What is Velocity? Speed in a given direction Units Include: MPH East
m/s West KPH South - Must have a direction – otherwise it is just a speed.

3 Acceleration An object changing its Velocity.
An object changing its direction. What is the formula for Acceleration? Think about velocity & time.

4 John and Caroline go out for a walk one day
John and Caroline go out for a walk one day. This graph represents their distance from home. Which statement accurately describes their walk? A) They walked quickly, then they were still, then they walked slowly. B) They walked forward fast, then they were still, then they walked backwards slow. C) They walked in one direction, then they were still, then they walked in the opposite direction. D) They walked faster and faster until they walked at a constant rate, then they walked slower and slower.

5 John and Caroline go out for a walk one day
John and Caroline go out for a walk one day. This graph represents the distance they traveled over time. During what part of their walk are they not moving? A) From 0 to 0.75 hours C) From 0.75 to 1.25 hours B) From 1.25 to 2.0 hours D) They are moving the entire time.

6 The graph shows the acceleration of a racehorse taking off from a starting gate. By how much did the horse's speed increase between 4 seconds and 6 seconds? A) 20 m/s C) 45 m/s B) 27 m/s D) 65 m/s

7 The graph represents the acceleration of two cars, Accel 1 and Accel 2, during a road trip. Which statement BEST describes the differences between the two cars' acceleration during the trip? A) Accel 1 accelerates throughout the entire trip; Accel 2 does not accelerate during the trip. B) Accel 1 rapidly accelerates and then stops; Accel 2 maintains a constant velocity during the trip. C) Accel 1 has a constant rate of acceleration; Accel 2 accelerates at different rates during the trip. D) Accel 1 accelerates for the first two-thirds of the trip; Accel 2 has a constant rate of acceleration.
