Predicting the Products for Double Replacement Reactions
2
Double Replacement Reactions
The cations and anions of two different compounds switch places. The reactants are composed of 2 different compounds. AB CD AD CB

Steps to Predict the Products:
Identify the cation in the first compound and the anion in the second compound. Ex: NaCl LiBr Write them together on the right side of the equation. Remember: the cation goes first! Ex: NaCl LiBr Find the charges of the two ions. Balance the charges and write the formula. Ex: NaCl LiBr

Steps (cont.): Identify the cation in the second compound and the anion in the first compound. Ex: NaCl LiBr Write them together on the right side of the equation. Remember: the cation goes frist! Ex: NaCl LiBr Find the charges of the two ions. Balance the charges and write the formula. Ex: NaCl LiBr Balance the equation.
