1 Do Now: Analyze the 2 pictures. What do you notice about each?
What do they have in common? What conclusions can you draw about the subjects of each? Union soldier Albert Cashier, who was really Jennie Hodgers, fought in dozens of battles during the Civil War. In 1913, she made headlines upon being discovered as a woman in an old soldiers home.

6 Discussion: The author notes in the article that according to DeAnne Blanton, “There are about 250 documented cases of women disguising themselves as men to fight in the Civil War”, but the author notes that the real number is likely much higher. Why does the author believe that the real number is much higher?

13 Summary: 1. How does the article support the idea of women’s rights? 2. Why does the author feel that the lifting of the ban of women in combat in 2013 serves as a “….belated acknowledgement of the long-ignored military role women played in the Civil War.”?

14 Your task: Do you think that women should be allowed in combat? Write a letter to Congress identifying your opinion on women in combat. Support your position with at least 3 reasons.
