2 I like for you to be still

3 Paraphrase I like for you to be still: it is as though you were absent, and you hear me from far away and my voice does not touch you. It seems as though your eyes had flown away and it seems that a kiss had sealed your mouth. She is invisible , nothing affect her The words I want to say to you I can’t express It seems as though you are here but I can’t reach you It seems that she doesn’t want to kiss him

4 As all things are filled with my soul
you emerge from the things, filled with my soul. You are like my soul, a butterfly of dream, and you are like the word Melancholy. Out of all the things that fill me your what sticks out the most The dream flutters in his head like a flash of memory But then it becomes depressing

5 I like for you to be still, and you seem far away.
It sounds as though you were lamenting, a butterfly cooing like a dove. And you hear me from far away, and my voice does not reach you: Let me come to be still in your silence. There is a far distance between them Its as if your sad but the silence of your presence is as beautiful as a dove She hears him but doesn’t want to listen so the speaker wants to sit and grieve with her

6 And let me talk to you with your silence
that is bright as a lamp, simple as a ring. You are like the night, with its stillness and constellations. Your silence is that of a star, as remote and candid. The speaker is trying to make her express herself Her silence is so loud it is as bright as a light She is like the stars that shine but don’t move

7 I like for you to be still: it is as though you were absent,
distant and full of sorrow as though you had died. One word then, one smile, is enough. And I am happy, happy that it's not true. He feels as if she is far away And that it seem her love for him had died Even though all these separation isn’t true because she loves him

8 Denotation Vs. Connotation
I like for you to be still as though you was absent -not present in a place or something. You emerge from the things , filled with soul --Come out I like for you to be still -calm and quiet Distant and full sorrow as though you had died -stopped living I like for you to be still as though you was absent -far away does not touch you You emerge from the things , filled with soul -filled and soul (filled the speaker heart and soul) I like for you to be still -silent Distant and full sorrow as though you had died -full of sorrow

9 Connotation 3 types of imagery/ motifs visual imagery auditory imagery
kinesthetic imagery love and desperation

10 Visual imagery Message: Don't be afraid if we loss our beloved person who always keep silent because that means he/she tried to understand ours self in different ways “ distant and full of sorrow as though you had died”(line 18) The line supports visual imagery because it have the word “died “. It conveys that the speaker sees the lover as keeping silent, so he is afraid of losing her .

11 Auditory imagery Message: with silence we can learn to more understand our lover “I like for you to be still…it sounds as though you were lamenting” The words “still” and “lamenting” conveys he doesn’t hear nothing from his lover , her love for him is shown more though actions.

12 Kinesthetic imagery Message: Don't be afraid if we loss our beloved person who always keep silent because that means he/she tried to understand ours self in different ways “and you hear me from far away my voice does not touch you”(lines,2) “and you hear me from far away, and my voice does not reach you” (line,11) “let me come to be still in your silence”(line,13) This supports the message because it have words “touch” “reach”, and “come” this line convey the speaker cannot touch or reach his lover if she always remain silent.

13 More connotations simile Personification
“You are like my soul ,a butterfly of dream”(line,7) Comparing her to his soul that lives on forever “and you are like the word melancholy”(line,8) Comparing his lover to sadness “That is bright as a lamp, simple as a ring” He compares her to a bright lamp since her silence speaks louder than words. “a butterfly cooing like a dove”(line,10) Comparing her beauty to a innocence of a dove “and you hear me from far away and my voice doesn’t touch you”(line,2) Using human characteristics, voice to touch his lover “it seems as that a kiss had sealed your mouth”(line,4) Giving human characteristics to a kiss as if it has the ability to seal her mouth. This shows that a kiss from her leaves him speechless.

14 Attitude “it sounds as though you are lamenting, a butterfly cooing like a dove”(line,10) “distant and full of sorrow as though you had died”(line,18) “lamenting” “died” These two words bring out the overall tone of the poem, solemn . These two words refers to the feeling of the speaker which are worry and afraid. He is afraid and worry because he feels his lover may feel sad or will disappear from his life. Also , he sounds desperate because he know the outcome if he lose her which is loneliness.

15 Shift A shift was seen in stanza 5, last two lines.
“One word then, one smile, is enough.”(line,19) “And I am happy, happy that it’s not true.”(line,20) At first it seem they are separating , but at the end he realize that none of them are true. He came to the conclusion that love can be express silently #SILENT LOVE

16 I like for you to be still
I’d like for you to express your love for me in words

17 Synopsis A desperate man who tries to figure out why his significant other isn’t speaking to him verbally , but only through actions , it seems as if she is depressed or wants to leave him , all of these separation made him realize she wasn’t happy , but then he later came to the conclusion that love can be express by silence. Basically , Pablo Neruda speaks of embracing his lover’s silence .

18 Theme love is just the presence of a significant other, no need for words or actions, just relish in their presence.
