1 Levels of Organization Project
Create 8 boxes on your white sheet of paper. Title the boxes (according to the order of the Levels of Organization) with the following terms: Atom, Element, Molecule, Cell, Tissue, Organ, Organ System, & Organism. In complete sentences, provide a description of each Level of Organization. Draw a picture for each Level of Organization. Color your pictures. Number (or draw arrows) to show how your boxes are organized from “simple” to “complex”. Use all the space that is provided per box. Big open white spaces will be grades as “incomplete”.

2 Section 1-3 8 characteristics of living things
Unit 1—Molecular Biology Essential Question Why is a human living, but a cell phone is not? Section characteristics of living things Learning Targets: Differentiate between living and non-living beings. Identify signs of life within a living and non-living things.

15 Characteristics of life
There are certain criteria that must be met for something to be considered living.

16 Characteristics of life
Living things share 8 characteristics.

17 Characteristics of life
They MUST have all 8 to be considered living.

18 Characteristics of life
1. Cells: The basic unit of all life.

19 Characteristics of life
Prokaryotes/eukaryotes There are 2 types: ____ (no nucleus) & _____ (nucleus) prokaryotes

35 All living things have one or more ____ .
cells cells All living things have one or more ____ . cells

36 A single cell meets all _#?_ requirements of living things.
cells 8 A single cell meets all _#?_ requirements of living things.

37 A single cell meets all _8_ requirements of living things.
cells 8 A single cell meets all _8_ requirements of living things.

38 cells Multicellular organisms (plants and animals) have specialized cells. Cells that perform different jobs Humans: at least 85 different cell types

39 Essential Question Diagram
Fold your white piece of paper in half (hamburger style). Label one side “human”. Label the other side “cell phone”. Draw an appropriate picture for each labeled side. Color your pictures. On the “cell phone” side list all the reasons why it can be considered a living thing. Then, list all the reasons that make it considered a non-living thing. On the “human” side list all the reasons why it can be considered a living thing. Then, list all the reasons that make it considered a non-living thing.
