13 That was a very brief outline of the strands of maths that are taught in schools. Running through all of these strands we teach the children how to apply their maths to solving problems and to think logically.

14 When do we teach maths? In Key Stages 1 and 2 your child is taught a one hour maths lesson every day, usually the first lesson of the day. Children in Reception class are also taught maths as a discreet subject, but, as their learning is play-based, their maths often complements , and overlaps with, other areas of the Foundation Stage curriculum. Opportunities for learning maths are all around them in the learning environment.

15 Maths in Science and Technology
Recording our observations Measuring

16 Maths in Geography Maps and plans Charts and graphs Directions

17 There is even maths in art...
What shapes can you see in this picture? How many acute angles? How many oblongs are there? How many of them are yellow?

18 ...and art in maths!

19 How can you help your child with their maths?

20 Games Lots of games you have at home can help your child with their maths. Google “Maths Games” and see what comes up!

21 Maths at Home Games

22 Maths at Home Learn Facts
The ability to recall facts quickly and confidently supports children in all other areas of their maths.

23 Learn Facts

24 Maths at Home Homework Please make sure that your child completes their homework. It will often be linked to current work in the classroom. See your child’s class teacher if you have any questions about a piece of homework.

25 Maths at Home The School Website
On the school website you will find links to online maths games and activities. You will also find our Calculations Guidelines documents, which explain the mental and written methods of calculations that we teach. These will soon be reviewed and updated, after which we will arrange a Parents’ Maths Information Meeting to explain them to you.

26 Look out for maths in the world around us!
