Bad news doesn’t get better with age. Kathy’s best move would have been to tactfully point out that the researcher does not have any remaining leave time as soon as she mentioned having family in town. By addressing the potential problem tactfully before it becomes a real problem, she could have potentially avoided what is likely to be an unpleasant situation.
She could have used the brief back technique, asked the researcher to tell her again what’s going on. If she confirmed the subtle hint at misusing sick leave, she should have tactfully reminded her that it would not be correct to misrepresent the situation by calling in on sick leave. She could offer a reasonable alternative. The chief can give advanced annual leave – document it in a memo and send it in with the time card. As TL, Kathy only has one option now. It is her responsibility to inform the chief about the conversation she had with the researcher prior to her calling in sick.
