2 Historical Truism . . . In every conflict, there are at least two opposing sides. Not every colonist believed that the conflict with Britain was a good idea.

3 In this corner . . . Red Coats = Loyalists
remained loyal to the king of England. Also known as “Tories”

4 Why be Loyal? Loyalists argued that Britain had taken care of the colonies both financially and militarily. French and Indian War was an example

5 How many were there? About 30% of the colonists were Loyalists.
New York was primarily Loyalists

6 And in this corner . . . Blue Coats = Patriots
Rebelled against the British Loyalists called them “Rebels.”

9 How many Patriots? Only about 40% of the colonists were Patriots.
They were the majority in New England
