4 1st generation SAF For economic development and to attract foreign investment, Singapore had to build a credible defence force swiftly In 1967, 2 battalions (3 SIR/ 3rd Battalion, Singapore Infantry Regiment and 4 SIR /4th Battalion, Singapore Infantry Regiment) were formed with the first group of National Servicemen.  The creation of the SAF in 1965 was a crucial defining moment for Singapore. We had to build a credible defence force without which we would not have been able to attract foreign investment and move on with our economic development to survive. And we had to do it swiftly. 1965 Israel helped with army Britain helped with airforce New Zealand with navy The Army then was supported by second-hand vehicles and surplus equipment left by the British. The Navy had two boats - one steel, one wooden. The Air Force started almost from scratch. Those of you who are interested to watch a series of 6-7 minute long documentary of Basic Military Training (BMT) life you can watch “Every Singaporean Son” which traces the lives of a few recruits as they undergo BMT in Tekong. National Service was not well received at first, but our political leaders worked hard to convince the public. This was not a military but a national issue.

5 2nd generation SAF Early 1980s to late 1990s
Upgrading and modernising of our Army, Navy and Air Force. Post-9/11, 2001, shift in the security landscape, which widened to include non-conventional threats such as terrorism and piracy.
