Alternative tourism usually focuses on secluded areas Trips are usually arranged during non-peak times in order to avoid crowds Peak-Season- the tourist season when facilities are most crowded and rates are the highest Off-peak season (Off-Season)- the tourist season when facilities are least crowded and the rates are lowest

All tourism, whether mass or alternative, has environmental impacts Every area has an environmental capacity (how much the environment can handle) which can be exceeded Traffic congestion, noise pollution and increased crime rates can be a result of tourism

During 1950’s, 97% of international travel destinations were to Western Europe and North America Today- more visitors to Asia, Africa, Central and South America

16 Timing In the past, north Americans travelled to warm destinations during out winter. Currently, many still travel to warm places in the winter, but they also travel at other times
