3. Proclamation of 1763 Issued by King George III
Banned settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains (Ohio River Valley)
Angered colonists because they fought for that land in the French and Indian War

4. Sugar ACt Taxed imported sugar and molasses Arrested smugglers
To raise money to pay debt from French & Indian War
If you were arrested, your trial was in a military court
No jury – the judge is a Navy officer
Assumed you are guilty until you can prove you are innocent

5. STAMP Act
Colonists pay a tax on paper goods (legal documents, newspapers, playing cards)
There was a stamp on the product to the show the tax had been paid
Proposed by George Grenville (finance minister) to pay off England’s debt
Effects: Samuel Adams organized committees of correspondence and Sons of Liberty to protest; colonists boycotted British goods and sent petitions to England; the Stamp Act was repealed because British merchants were losing money.

6. Quartering Act
British left 10,000 troops (redcoats) to enforce the laws
British didn’t want to pay for the soldiers’ food and housing, so they forced colonists let the soldiers live with them and feed them

7. Townshend Acts Tax on lead, glass, tea, paint, etc.
Collected on the merchant ships that arrived in port; cost passed on to buyers in the stores
Protests: Daughters of Liberty boycotted (not buy British goods & make their own stuff to use)

8. Boston Massacre Caused by tension between soldiers and Bostonians
Started with snowballs and rocks thrown at guards at Boston customshouse (tax collector’s office) – mob
6 people dead – Crispus Attucks, African American was first one shot
Trial – defended by Patriot John Adams – “Every man deserves a fair trial.”
Led to repeal of Townshend Acts to calm people down, except for the tax on tea

9. Tea Act Designed to help British tea merchants make money
Taxed tea, but the taxed tea was still cheaper than smuggled tea
People refused to buy the tea
Sons of Liberty dumped the tea into Boston harbor – Boston Tea Party (Civil Disobedience)

10. Taxation without Representation
Colonists elected local government members and followed their own laws.
Parliament made laws in England for the colonies, but colonists could not elect anyone to Parliament
Colonists had no representatives in Parliament, so they said Parliament shouldn’t be able to make laws for them
“No taxation without representation” became the colonial slogan
