Biology Chapter 1 The Scope of Biology
2
Biology Explores Life (1.1)
Biosphere all the inhabitable parts of the planet Ecosystems a community consisting of living and non living things Organisms individual living things Cells basic units of life that make up organisms DNA and genes inheritance info Biosphere – includes most regions of land, water (rivers, oceans, lakes etc)
3
Biology Explores Diversity (1.2)
Over 1.5 million species (distinct form of life) discovered 3 domains: 1) archaea 2) bacteria 3) eukarya
4
Archaea & Bacteria Unicellular Simple (no nuclei: prokaryotic cells)
5
Eukarya All eukaryotic (have nuclei) Divided into 4 subgroups
protists, fungi, plants and animals Some unicellular (protists & fungi) Some multicellular (protists, fungi, plants & animals)
6
Ch 2: The Science of Biology
7
(2.1)
8
Data Two Types of Data Quantitative data Qualitative data
The recorded info Ex: A plant growth chart Two Types of Data Quantitative data Measurements, #’s Qualitative data Descriptions, observations
9
Observations vs Inference
Use of senses to gain information Inference Logical conclusion based on __________ observation
10
(2.2)
11
Hypothesis and Scientific Method
One example of the Scientific Method: Using Science attempts to explain a question using the scientific method One key element is always there… The HYPOTHESIS
12
Scientific Method: Forming and Testing a Hypothesis
Testable suggestion to answer a scientific question Can it be tested? Falsifiable – something that could prove a hypothesis is false A wrong hypothesis is NOT a failure
13
Eg: flashlight not working
Pg. 31 Eg: flashlight not working
14
Also needed in Science Variable: Controlled Experiment:
a condition that can differ within an experiment Controlled Experiment: testing only ONE variable at a time that variable is compared to the “control”
15
(2.3)
16
Evidence in Science Evidence “ Biology Teacher REALLY an Alien!”
Collected body of data from observations and experiments Must be repeatable “ Biology Teacher REALLY an Alien!” Can this be tested?
17
The Limitation of Science
Need repeatable observations and testable hypothesizes Ex: supernatural phenomenon “A way of knowing” Music you like Right from wrong
18
Theories in Science Theory
Well tested explanation, many, many, many observations Can be changed based on new info A hypothesis needs a lot of support to become a theory Broader than a hypothesis
19
Science, Technology and Society
Society asks questions Ethical? Who? Why? Goal of Science Understand through observation and testing Goal of Technology Apply scientific understanding
