Presentation on theme: "Do now activity What is directional selection?"— Presentation transcript:

1 Do now activity What is directional selection?
What is stabilizing selection? What is disruptive selection? Draw a graph of each type of selection and label the type of graph.

2 Do now activity How is the picture an example of genetic drift?
How is the picture an example of Founders Effect? Genetic drift because the relative frequency changed from mutation at 4.5% to 20% to 41% (Total is 22) because of earthquake/death/etc. Founders because Small group moved away so relative frequency of original population went from 4.5% to 0% mutation

3 Section 7-4: biodiversity
Essential Question: What role do humans play in biodiversity? Learning Target Create a flow map that demonstrates the effect of an environmental change on a species. Extension: How does the change of one species impact other species within the same environment? Explain the impact of human activity on the diversity of species. Examples can include: artificial selection and decreased genetic diversity. Section 7-4: biodiversity

6 Don’t forget to chunk your notes!

7 overview Bio = Life Diversity: Variety
Biodiversity: variety of life in the biosphere

8 The variation of genes within a species is called _____ ______.
overview The variation of genes within a species is called _____ ______. Helps to prevent diseases

9 The variation of genes within a species is called genetic diversity.
overview The variation of genes within a species is called genetic diversity. Helps to prevent diseases

10 Artificial selection is when……???

11 Artificial selection Artificial selection is when humans choose which animals get to reproduce.

12 Artificial selection This decreases _____ _____ because only the variations useful to humans are chosen to reproduce.

13 Artificial selection This decreases genetic diversity because only the variations useful to humans are chosen to reproduce.

14 Human interference Altering habitats
Human activities that reduce biodiversity: Altering habitats Introducing foreign species into established food webs Polluting ecosystems Hunting species to extinction habitats altered for housing, agriculture, or industry habitat fragmentation: splitting a habitat into small fragments the smaller the habitat fragment, the fewer the number of species Habitat Fragmentation

15 Human interference Altering habitats
Human activities that reduce biodiversity: Altering habitats Introducing foreign species into established food webs Polluting ecosystems Hunting species to extinction invasive species: species that have migrated to places they are not native also called exotic species reproduce rapidly with no natural enemies, driving native species to extinction Invasive Species

16 Human interference Altering habitats
Human activities that reduce biodiversity: Altering habitats Introducing foreign species into established food webs Polluting ecosystems Hunting species to extinction can alter habitats or kill species directly (Exxon Valdez) bioaccumulation: the accumulation of many pollutants in the tissues of individual organisms biomagnification: the multiplication of the effects of some pollutants as they work their way through the food chain Bioaccumulation

17 Human interference Altering habitats

18 Human interference Altering habitats
Human activities that reduce biodiversity: Altering habitats Introducing foreign species into established food webs Polluting ecosystems Hunting species to extinction extinction: when the last member of a species dies endangered species: a species whose population is declining and in danger of extinction Extinction-1681

19 Human interference Altering habitats
