1 Do Now Copy the HW: Section 3 quiz Monday.
Complete the class participation form and put it face down on the back table. Put NAME on it. Take out your song/comic strip/story from yesterday.

2 So how did cities develop?
With your group, read page 22 and the top of page 23. Stop where it says “First Civilizations” Write on your activity sheet: 3 Things a Place Needs to Become a City With your group, brainstorm and write down WHY you think this was needed for a city to grow! Venn Diagram Write down differences between farming villages and early cities in the outside bubbles Write down similarities in the middle

3 3 Things a Place Needs to Become a City
1. Rich soil needed rich soil for farming good soil needed to create a food surplus 2. Dependable source of water needed fresh water for drinking and growing crops cannot use ocean water (salt kills plants and you can’t drink it) rain is not reliable enough rivers are the best source of fresh water 3. Building materials need building materials in order to create strong, long-lasting buildings

4 Differences between Farming Villages and Early Cities
Smaller population Everyone was a farmer Larger population Public buildings Governments Different jobs available

5 Similarities between Farming Villages and Early Cities
Both had rich soil, a dependable source of drinking water, and materials to build shelter.

6 Closure Discuss the PROS and CONS of living in an early city versus living in a farming village.
