1 States Of Matter

2 Pp 60-73 Pg. 60 Pg. 60 Pg. 60 Pg. 67 Pg. 61 Pg. 62 Pg. 63 Pg. 61 Pg. 63 I briefly reviewed differences between solids/liquids/gasses. Spent a little more time of surface tension and viscocity yearI used white boards and Prezi to discuss gas laws. (got to 1st gas law on day 1.) When looking at gasses, I also explained how a pressure gauge works. (maybe we could take the weight of some cars again?) Pg. 61 Pg. 63 Do the sections using text book in green. Save the orange for me to discuss

4 Motion: Particles vibrate in place; particles move slowly
Definite Shape Definite volume SOLIDS: Motion: Particles vibrate in place; particles move slowly Spacing: Close together Attraction: Strong  particles held tightly in place Compressible? No

5 Motion: Particles vibrate in place; particles move slowly
Definite Shape Definite volume SOLIDS: Motion: Particles vibrate in place; particles move slowly Spacing: Close together Attraction: Strong  particles held tightly in place Compressible? No

6 Two Types of Solids Crystalline: orderly, 3D arrangement in repeating pattern of rows Ex: Iron, diamonds, ice Usually harder solids Amorphous: atoms/molecules arranged in no particular order Ex: rubber, wax Usually softer solids

7 Crystalline:

8 Amorphous:

9 Motion: Particles slide past one another Spacing: Further apart
NO Definite Shape Definite volume LIQUIDS: Motion: Particles slide past one another Spacing: Further apart Attraction: Moderate (but particles move fast enough to help overcome some of the attraction between them) Compressible? No

10 Not very flowy = Viscous.
LIQUIDS: VISCOSITY RESISTANCE TO FLOW: Not very flowy = Viscous. Just Show Part of it

11 LIQUIDS: SURFACE TENSION
Liquid especially attracted to itself at surface Water has very high surface tension

12 LIQUIDS: SURFACE TENSION

13 GASES: Compressible? YES
NO Definite Shape NO Definite volume GASES: Motion: Particles move quickly and independently of one another Spacing: Particles very far apart Attraction: Weak attraction between particles Compressible? YES

14 GASES: Motion: Moving particles HIT THINGS = PRESSURE
NO Definite Shape NO Definite volume GASES: Motion: Moving particles HIT THINGS = PRESSURE OUCH OUCH

15 Plasmas https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVEGJZxglIg
99 percent of known matter Made of broken apart atoms (charged particles) Conduct electricity Very hot! Examples: sun, lightning, fire, aurora borealis, fluorescent lights
