T HREE S TATES OF M ATTER Use your science text book pages 66-69

I N THE KITCHEN, YOU MIGHT FIND 3 DIFFERENT FORMS OF WATER. W HAT ARE THE 3 FORMS OF WATER AND WHERE EXACTLY WOULD YOU FIND THEM ? NAME THE FORM WHERE IS THE FORM FOUND?

DEFINE THE FOLLOWING WORDS STATES OF MATTER---- SOLID--- LIQUID--- GAS

WRITE THE DEFINITIONS FOR THE WORDS BELOW. SURFACE TENSION--- VISCOSITY---

W ATCH THE MOVIE AND THEN ANSWER THE QUESTIONS ON THE NEXT SLIDE.

ANSWER TRUE OR FALSE TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS. Particles of a solid move fast enough to overcome the strong attraction between them Particles of a liquid are close together but can slide past one another. Particles of a gas move too slow to overcome the attraction between them. Therefore, they can’t move.

C RYSTALLINE SOLIDS Crystalline solids have a very orderly, 3 dimensional arrangement of particles. The particles of crystalline solids are in a repeating pattern of rows. Examples of crystalline solids include: iron, diamond, and ice READ AND UNDERSTAND

AMORPHOUS SOLIDS A MORPHOUS SOLIDS ARE MADE OF PARTICLES THAT DO NOT HAVE A SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT. E ACH PARTICLE IS IN 1 PLACE BUT NOT IN ANY ORDER OR PATTERN E XAMPLES OF AMORPHOUS SOLIDS ARE : GLASS, RUBBER, AND WAX. READ AND UNDERSTAND

L IQUIDS Liquids have a definite volume but not a definite shape. The particles in liquids move fast enough to overcome some of the attractions between them The particles slide past each other until the liquid takes the shape of its container READ AND UNDERSTAND

S PECIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF LIQUIDS Surface tension causes some liquids to form spherical drops like the beads of water shown on the plant below. Different liquids have different surface tensions. For example gasoline has a very low surface tension and forms flat drops Name another place that you see beads of water forming. Double click in the white area below and then type your answer

S PECIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF LIQUIDS --- -- CONTINUED Viscosity- is a liquid’s resistance to flow. For example, honey flows more slowly than water. So, honey has a higher viscosity than water. Which liquid has a higher viscosity syrup or soda? Which liquid has a higher viscosity honey or vinegar? Which liquid has a higher viscosity gasoline or oil?

W ATCH THE V IDEO AND THEN ANSWER THE QUESTION. Why was the man able to walk on the water mixture? Double click below and type your answer.

G AS Gas is the stage of matter that has no definite shape or volume. The particles of a gas move quickly. So they can break away completely from one another. The particles of a ____ are very far apart and move independently of one another A liquid’s resistance to flow is called______. The shape and volume of matter in the _______ state do not change. gas solidviscosity Type the correct word into the purple box above.

Q UICK Q UIZ The three most familiar states of matter are solid, liquid, and gasoline. All matter is made of large particles called atoms and molecules that attract each other and move constantly. A solid has a constant shape and volume. A gas has a definite shape or volume. Answer true or false to the statements below. _________ ________
