1 Protein Synthesis

2 The Players DNA mRNA rRNA tRNA Amino acids Endoplasmic Reticulum
Golgi Apparatus There are 7 main players in the process of protein synthesis. There are the instructions in the DNA that code for the sequence of amino acids in the protein. The information in the DNA is transcribed and then translate by the 3 RNAs. The polypeptide chain is then moved from the ER to the Golgi where it is sorted, finished and released. We will look at each of these steps in some detail but the nitty gritty will wait until we reach the genetics unit.

3 The Field

4 Transcription - the Nucleus
DNA unzips mRNA is created using the DNA as a template mRNA leaves the nucleus through nuclear pores

5 Translation occurs in the RER
mRNA attaches to ribosome tRNA brings in amino acids Codon-anticodon match Dehydration synthesis – protein chain elongates Message done Protein released Ribosome falls apart mRNA breaks up mRNA tRNA Protein chain ribosome amino acids

6 Post Processing in the Golgi
Protein with RER membrane moves to Golgi Protein “finishing” in Golgi Protein released to final destination
