Chapter 1: The Pioneers Ms. Lee

Author’s Purpose To inform the reader about the creation of the hamburger and its impact on society. To explain how the hamburger is made and what type of reputation it had. To persuade the reader that hamburgers are safe to consume.

Author’s Argument The author argued that hamburgers are a safe, healthy choice for the average consumer. Additionally, he stated that the faster a customer is fed, the happier they are. People are lazy and don’t want to get out of their vehicles to eat.

Fact and Opinions Facts Opinions
People preferred cow tongue and spinach to hamburgers Charlie “Hamburger” Nagreen created the first hamburger because eating meatballs became too difficult. The McDonalds brothers created the first Speedee Service System still in use today. Americans now eat about 13 billion hamburgers every year. This can circle the earth more than thirty-two times. “The key to a successful franchise can be described in a single word: sameness.” “The story of Harland Sanders is perhaps the most remarkable.” …”carhops tended to be very nice to their customers and encouraged them to eat and drink a lot.”

My Opinion America thrives off fast food and the pace that it is delivered. Fast food franchises have come a long way but still have some of the same expectations. When Charlie made the first hamburger, I doubt he knew that Americans would eat it all the time.

QAR Would “Hamburger” Charlie be proud of how fast food franchises are run? How many fast food places still use carhops to deliver their food? Have any fast food restaurants failed?
