Who established the camp? Richard Thomalla and Franz Stangl Why was the camp established? Second death camp established as part of the Aktion Reinhard programme. As an extermination camp

3 Establishment/Operation
Who operated the camp? Approximately 20 SS men and 100 Ukrainian guards Franz Stangl, until he was transferred to Treblinka and replaced by Franz Reichleitner How was the camp operated? All Jews sent to this camp were intended to be killed. The camp was highly secret, and most Jews were sent to death upon arrival.

4 Killing Method - Final Solution
Shot- by Gestapo (Rifles, shotguns) Gassed- by gas chambers (Zyklon B gas) & by gassing trucks where they would lock them in truck with exhaust fumes. Starvation- lack of food (Little to no calories) Worked to Death (Work all day, no water) Poor health conditions (Illness)

5 Notable Prisoners Leon Feldhendler: Planned the revolt and escape of all prisoners in the camp. Alexander “Sasha” Pechersky: Russian prisoner of war, helped Feldhendler organize the revolt.

6 Resistance Prisoners organized a resistance group in Spring 1943.
On October 14th, 600 prisoners initiated an uprising. Killed nearly a dozen German personnel. About 300 escaped, but most didn’t live to see the end of the war.

7 Liberation After the uprising, the Nazis liquidated Sobibor and killed any remaining inmates. In Summer of 1944 the area around the former camp was liberated by the Red Army.

8 Facts The Sobibor camp was kept so secret, that its victims and survivors weren’t believed and were being forgotten. About 50 people survived the revolt. The camp covered a rectangular area of 1,312 by 1,969 feet, at its largest. It was surrounded by a triple line of barbed wire fencing and guarded by watchtowers. Most of the Jews came from Lublin, Czechoslovakia, Germany and Austria.

9 Facts Sobibor consisted of two camps which were divided into three parts. Located near the Sobibor village, in the eastern part of the Lublin district of Poland. Between 150,000 and 250,000 Jews lost their lives in Sobibor. The uprising in Sobibor did not take place according to plan, in the end it was successful. Many prisoners did escape, and some of them did survive. The occupants’ treatment varied depending on whether they were from the East or the West.
