1 Measurement: Volume & Capacity
Estimating and measuring using both non-standard and standard units

2 Volume and Capacity Volume
The volume of a solid is the amount of space it occupies. Capacity Capacity is the amount of liquid a container can hold when it is full.

3 Estimating volume If 6 liters of water were needed to fill the cylinder to the level shown, then about how many liters will be needed to fill the cylinder completely? What is your estimate? 6 liters

4 Solution If 6 liters of water were needed to fill the cylinder to the level shown, then another 12 liters will be needed to fill the cylinder completely. The container holds about 18 liters. How close was your estimate? 6 liters 6 liters 6 liters

5 Estimating volume If it took 4 gallons to fill the container to the level shown, then about how many gallons will be needed to fill the container completely? What is your estimate? 4 gallons

6 Solution If it took 4 gallons to fill the container to the level shown, then another 4 gallons will be needed to fill the container completely. This container holds about 8 gallons. How close was your estimate? 4 gallons 4 gallons

7 How many? There are 2 cups in each pint.
There are 2 pints in each quart. There are 4 quarts in each gallon. 16 cups = 1 gallon 8 pints = 1 gallon 4 quarts = 1 gallon

8 How many? How many pints are in 3 quarts? ___ pt. = 3 qt.
(Use 2 pints = 1 quart to help you) How many gallons are equivalent to 32 pints? ___ gal. = 32 pt. (Use 8 pints = 1 gallon to help you)

9 Answers. How many pints are in 3 quarts? _6_ pt. = 3 qt.
( = 6, or 3 x 2 = 6) How many gallons are equivalent to 32 pints? _4_ gal. = 32 pt. (32 / 8 = 4)

10 Which is more? 6 quarts 6 pints + 4 quarts

11 Answer 6 quarts 6 pints + 4 quarts Solution:
If 6 pints = 3 quarts, then 4 quarts + 3 quarts > 6 quarts. 6 pints + 4 quarts

12 Which pair shows the same amount?
a) 2 pints, 1 gallon b) 1 gallon, 4 quarts c) 3 cups, 1 pint d) 4 cups, 2 quarts

13 Which pair shows the same amount?
a) 2 pints, 1 gallon (2 pt. = 1 qt.) b) 1 gallon, 4 quarts c) 3 cups, 1 pint (2 c. = 1 pt.) d) 4 cups, 2 quarts (8 c. = 2 qt.)

14 Calculating volume A rectangular prism is a solid with six faces, each face being a rectangle. To find the volume of a rectangular prism, multiply the measurements for the length, width, and height (V= l x w x h). Volume is expressed in cubic units… that is, the number of unit-size (such as cm or in.) cubes that would be needed to fill the shape completely.

15 Find the volume of the shape below.
Count the cubes to help you find the volume of this solid. (Not all the cubes are visible.)

16 Answer. Count the cubes to help you find the volume of this solid. (Not all the cubes are visible.) 16 cubic units

17 Find the volume of the shape below
Calculate the volume of this solid. (Use the formula V = l x w x h.) 2 cm 10 cm

18 Answer. Calculate the volume of this solid. (Use the formula V = l x w x h.) 2 x 2 x 10 = 40 cm3 2 cm 10 cm

19 Summary Volume of a solid is the amount of space it occupies.
Capacity is the amount of liquid a container can hold when it is full. Knowing how much it takes to fill a fraction of a container can help you estimate the amount needed to fill the container completely. You can measure, or count, to find the volume of a solid or capacity of a container. You can use a formula to find the volume.
