Owen starts the poem by describing the soldiers as being “Bent double, like old beggars under sacks”. This use of simile shows the reader how physically difficult life was for the men that they have to be stooped over as their backs are too weak to support themselves. The fact that they look like “old beggars” suggests that they are in a pitiable situation which will shock the reader and helps to emphasise how terrible the war was for the soldiers. (81) Instead Owen’s opening simile, “Bent double, like old beggars under sacks”, immediately introduces the theme of premature ageing, emphasising the degenerative nature of war on the human body. Characteristic of many of his poems, Owen’s imagery reveals the dehumanisation of the men who he also describes as “coughing like hags”, which has connotations of the unworldly and evil. (57)
