8 The Balkans The Balkans are a region in Southeastern Europe. In the early 1900s, many nationalities sought independence from larger empires.

9 Serbian Nationalism The people of Serbia wanted independence from Austria-Hungary. The people of Serbia and the Russian Empire are ethnically Slavic. The Russian people felt that it was their obligation to help the Slavic people of the world.

10 The Assassination A Serbian Nationalist group known as the Black Hand sought to make Serbia free from Austro-Hungarian rule. Gavrilo Princip assassinated Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

11 How the War Starts Serbian nationalists kill an Austrian Prince. Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia. Russia declares war on Austria-Hungary to defend the Serbs. Germany declares war on Russia. Great-Britain and France declare war on Germany and Austria-Hungary.
