1 Providing Students a Window to the Past!
February 20, 2014 NCCSS

2 Please place your belongings down and stand in a circle
The session will begin with all participants standing in a circle. They will be provided with an inflatable globe and instructed to randomly toss it at one another. When they catch the globe they have to yell out one word that they associate with “North Carolina.” Next they will count off and be dispersed at the various “history labs” that will be located throughout the room.

Work with your group to answer the provided questions View the artifact through the lens of a historian or geographer (at map station – only)

4 Historians Examine primary source evidence to understand the past.
You should be able to : Think chronologically. Understand historical events. Analyze historical documents and artifacts Conduct historical research. The lab will be an artifact along with a worksheet with some guiding questions pertaining to the artifact. They will be told to view the artifact through the lens of a historian and will conclude the collaborative experience through the development of a guiding question that will drive their future inquiries.

6 What if I were to have asked you to look at your artifact through the lens of a cultural anthropologist or economist or geographer or political analyst, how would your driving question have differed?

7 How would you adapt some of these strategies to use in your social studies classroom?

Share best practices in helping students to hone historical thinking skills and disciplinary literacy Create an experiential workshop for participants that allows the process to just “happen” Skills: Analyze Primary sources Interpret data in historical maps Analyze visual, literary and musical sources Share lesson plan
