Brown’s aim was to retrieve weapons from the arsenal and spark a slave revolt He secured the financial backing of six northern businessmen (Secret Six) Brown could not inform slaves in advance The raid managed to be kept largely a secret (about 80 people knew about it!) 16th October: John Brown and 18 of his men left Maryland for Harper’s Ferry Brown and his men captured the arsenal with remarkable ease Some of his men rounded up a handful of hostages, including a few slaves… Word of the raid spread, and by morning Brown and his men were surrounded. A train pulled into Harper’s Ferry and Brown men shot, killing a black baggage master A company of U.S. marines arrived on October 17, led by Colonel Robert E. Lee and Lieutenant J. E. B. Stuart. On the morning of October 19, the soldiers overran Brown and his followers. Ten of his men were killed, including two of his sons.
