4 John Brown : aka psycho abolitionist! Background: Failed 20 times in 6 states to start a business Went to Bleeding Kansas w/ sons They killed 5 pro slavery men with swords

5 Leads 5 blacks & 13 whites to armory in Harper’s Ferry, VA. Wagon full of guns to start a slave revolt Takes 9 hostages Federal Troops (Robert E. Lee) stormed Raid on Harper’s Ferry october ‘59

6 THE OUTCOME : No slaves revolted! 9 Died: –1 frmr slave, His 2 sons, and 9 more! Brown tried for TREASON Hanged in VA square

9 THEN in 1860…

10 The “last straw” for the South… No way are they going to have a Northern Pres! So, They leave! Lincoln elected Pres !

11 Union/North States = 23 Pres = Lincoln Confederation/ South States = 11 Pres = Jefferson Davis Confed. Gov’t Same Constitution Held in Hotel JD terrified! All Northern troops told to evacuate S. Forts

12 ULTIMATUM from the South: Lincoln Must Choose: Send People to help Ft. Sumter & be responsible for the start of the war OR Do nothing & let soldiers die JD Must Choose: Do nothing & he (and his new country) are weak OR Attack Ft. Sumter and start the war, might lose states Gen. Anderson (union) Must Choose: Obey orders from Lincoln, get attacked, lose men OR Accept the offer to leave peacefully and save the lives of 75 men Says STAY & SENDS FOOD! “ You have until 4:30 am tomorrow to get UNION troops out of FT. SUMTER or we open fire!”
