1 3-8 Solving Radical equations
Secondary Math 3 3-8 Solving Radical equations

2 Warm Up Solve using square roots: 2 𝑥 2 −20=142

3 Vocabulary A radical equation is an equation that has a variable in a radicand or a variable with a rational exponent. 2𝑥+3 =4 4𝑥− =1 The index is the small number outside of the radical sign. 𝑛 𝑘 The radicand is the expression under the radical sign.

4 Solving Radical Equations
To solve a radical equation: Isolate the radical on one side of the equation. Raise each side to the power of the index. Simplify Solve for x Check solutions in original equation to eliminate any extraneous solutions. Solve: 4+ 3𝑥+10 =9 3𝑥+10 =5 3𝑥 = 5 2 3𝑥+10=25 3𝑥=15 𝑥=5 =9 =9 4+5=9 9=9

5 HW #6 3𝑥+4 +6=13

6 Solve −1+ 3 2𝑥−5 =2

7 HW #9 Solve 3 3𝑥+4 +1=2
