1 Upper Limb Prosthetic Adaptation/Redesign
Group 6 Cassie Edwards, Meg Stevenson, Amy Thomas, Meagan Williams Advisor: Dr. Mark Richter

2 Project Objectives Design or modify an already existing design for an upper limb prosthetic for a boy with upper limb deformities Create an upper limb prosthesis

3 Existing Device Drawbacks: Taking prosthesis on and off takes considerable amount of time and effort Redesign existing prosthesis to make it more functional for an active 8-year-old boy

4 Goals for New Device Short-term Goals Long-term Goals
Dress independently Go to the bathroom on his own Long-term Goals Be able to live independently i.e. – drive a car, cook for himself, use standard household items, etc.

5 Work Completed Started working with Aaron Fitzsimmons, a local prosthetist Learned how to make a cast and discussed ideas for making the prosthesis functional Made a cast of Matt’s arm and took measurements of his extremities

6 Ideas for the Prosthesis
Humeral cuff with Velcro closure Stump sock interface over humerus External elbow hinges Myobock hand with myoelectric interface Figure 9 suspension system

7 Current Work Going to get a Myoboy from Aaron in order to test the electrical activity in Matt’s arm muscles Obtaining a positive mold of Matt’s arm from Aaron Use Matt’s arm measurements in order to choose correct sizes for device components

8 Future Work Start designing a device based on whether or not Matt has enough electrical activity in his muscles Obtain the parts needed to create the functioning prosthesis Begin building the device and testing its functionality
