WN - Think about how the setting of the book actually influences what happens in the book. Explain how it works. In what ways is that similar to or different from how “setting” affects your life? Setting House Project Examine the effects of setting on the reader and how a writer can have the setting “tell” the story. Study the poem “Abandoned Farmhouse” by Ted Kooser and then write your own poem mimicking his style. Follow directions on handout! Fold Paper house according to instructions…use materials to decorate however you see fit, but be sure to look at your rubric! Project Due on Tuesday, December 3rd

12 The Giver – Day 1 con’t Utopia is an ideally perfect place, especially in its social, political and moral aspects. WN: Write your thoughts about what a utopian society would be like. What are the rules or laws? What happens if someone breaks them? Include as many details as possible.

Today we are going to begin reading a novel by Lois Lowry. The main character’s name is Jonas. Jonas lives in a community where everything is rigidly structured.

14 The Giver - Day 1 con’t As long as everyone follows the rules, virtually nothing can go wrong – there is no hunger, no poverty, no crime, no pain…and there is no love. Feelings were eradicated from people’s experiences generations ago. (What does eradicate mean?)

15 The Giver – Day 1 con’t They were seen as obstacles to the community’s goal of Sameness for all individuals. It was believed that feelings interfered with an individual’s judgment, so they were taken away, along with all the choices of everyday life. Now, members of the community never question decisions already made for them. They simply live according to the rules. People aren’t unhappy living this way, but they aren’t happy either. They simply know no other way.

16 The Giver – Day 1 con’t Another concept that must be understood before you begin reading is “euphemisms.” Do you know what a euphemism is? You use them every day. A euphemism is the act or an example of substituting a mild, indirect or vague term for one considered harsh, blunt or offensive.

17 The Giver – Day 1 con’t For example, sometimes we do not want to say someone “died” so we use euphemisms. What are some euphemisms for dying. (passed on, went on to a greater reward, cashing in, checkout out, met the grim reaper, cashing in his chips, reached his journey’s end). In this story, the author uses a number of euphemisms and one of your assignments will be to determine what is really meant by some of the euphemisms used in the story.

Look at the cover of this book. Who can tell me who the author is of this story? (Lois Lowry) Read the first page to the class. What predictions did you make about why you thing he was afraid?

19 The Giver – Day 1 con’t Homework: How does Jonas’s community use euphemism to distance itself from the realities of their world? Be specific. How does our society use euphemism to distance the realities of death, bodily functions, aging, etc. Give examples.

Agenda is based on the curriculum set aside for all students that will be in attendance today…rotating schedule of class schedule only! We will work on Math concepts ALL DAY! Free day for all those that scored proficient or advanced last year!
