FAWC and UFAW initiated and publicised 5 freedoms as a concept for assessment of welfare, now widely used by all welfare organisations and sometimes also as a legal framework.

Kind and fair handling and restraint, demonstrating understanding of natural behaviour to minimise stress, suitable social groupings and environmental stimuli
Provision of bedding, appropriate temperature, rugging of clipped horse, treatment of skin conditions/parasites
Opportunity to graze, before social interactions, experience grooming…
