1 Equipment Slide 2 table printed per student
Slides 5-7 printed as instructions per station Green pens Card sort (already cut up to save time) Double bubble sheet per student Feely boxes. Marbles, rice and water Beakers Tray of materials (solids, liquids and gases) for student to touch and feel. 3x syringes – one filled with water, air, and sand. 3 blocks – one wood, metal, polystyrene. Basic electrical circuit – bulb, battery, wire, croc clips Air freshener, squash in a small beaker, solid in a beaker – testing if it diffuses/spreads out

2

3 Property solid liquid gas Is it easy to squash? (compress) Does it conduct heat well? Can it spread out? Can it stretch? Is it heavy? Property solid liquid gas Is it easy to squash? (compress) Does it conduct heat well? Can it spread out? Can it stretch? Is it heavy?

4 Comparison task. students to copy this into their books or you can print so that they can stick in books. They need to write similarities in the middle bubbles like – particles are held together etc. Differences – solids are fixed and have a solid shape whereas on the liquid differences you could put takes the shape of the container.

5 DO NOT PULL THE PLUNGER OUT!!
Three Blocks Here are 3 blocks. They are the same shape and size but are made from different materials. Find the mass of the blocks. What do you notice? Why is this? Syringes Here are 3 syringes. One is full of sand (solid), one is full of water (liquid) and one is full of air (gas). Try and squeeze the syringes. What do you notice? Why is this? DO NOT PULL THE PLUNGER OUT!!

6 Conductor or not Beaker challenge
Here are different materials. Connect them into the circuit and see if they bulb lights up. What do you notice? Why is this? Key word: Conducts electricity. Beaker challenge Fill the beaker with the marbles. What do you notice? Add in the sand to the beaker containing the marbles. What do you notice? and why? Now pour the water into the beaker. What happens? And why?

7 Smells nice! Here are different materials. Remove the lid of each container. Can you smell it? Explain why you can smell it. Walk back a few steps. Can you smell it now? Please put lids back on for the next group. Have a feel! Here are different materials. Have a feel of them and fill in the table. Can you stretch the material? What do you notice? Why is this? Fill in the table.

8 What do the words mean? Squash (compress) Conduct Stretch Spread
TWWL: about the particle model SO THAT I CAN… state how materials are made up of particles describe the properties of a substance in its three states Describe the similarities and differences between the three states 20 November 2018 What do the words mean? Squash (compress) Conduct Stretch Spread

9 Circus Time Task: In groups, you are going to carry out different
experiments which are situated around the room. You have per station. You must: Follow the instructions at the station Record your results on the worksheet Work as a group, involving everyone Circus experiments.

10 Circus Time Task: using your results from your experiments complete the table. solid liquid gas Is it easy to squash? (compress) Does it conduct heat well? Can it spread out? Can it stretch? Is it heavy?

11 Swap books to mark your work!
PM Were you right? Swap books to mark your work! solid liquid gas Is it easy to squash? (compress) Does it conduct heat well? Can it spread out? Can it stretch? Is it heavy?

12 Everything is made of matter!
Think pair share – answer is matter.

13 What is Matter? Matter consists of very small particles. The
difference between solids, liquids and gases is in how these particles are ARRANGED. You may have heard the terms ATOMS or MOLECULES instead. Questioning – how can we represent a particle?

14 Which is a liquid, which is a solid and which is a gas?
Particle model Which is a liquid, which is a solid and which is a gas? How can you tell?

15 Card Sort Task: Sort the cards into 3 groups using
the headings solid, liquids and gases. Once you are happy with your groupings stick them in your books. Cord sort – these will hopefully be pre-cut

16 SM How many right? Cord sort – these will hopefully be pre-cut

17 How many right?

18 Comparison task. students to copy this into their books or you can print so that they can stick in books. They need to write similarities in the middle bubbles like – particles are held together etc. Differences – solids are fixed and have a solid shape whereas on the liquid differences you could put takes the shape of the container.

19 Reflection How do you feel about today’s objectives?
Choose a face and write why you feel this way (I think I can now _______ because ______________) state how materials are made up of particles describe the properties of a substance in its three states Describe the similarities and differences between the three states
