HAIKU The art of simplicity, the power of words

2 The entire poem is only 17 syllables long.
What is a Haiku? Haiku poems are short, brilliantly vivid poems that contain visually complete descriptions of moments in a poet’s experience. The entire poem is only 17 syllables long. The first line of poetry is 5 syllables, the second line is 7, and the third is 5 Haiku poems are often written in pairs to show contrast. For example, if one poem is written about Heaven, the other might be about Hell. A syllable is “an uninterrupted segment of speech consisting of a vowel sound, a diphthong, or a syllabic consonant.” Do you remember that rule from elementary school? Just put your hand on your chin and every time it moves up and down that is one syllable.

6 REmember Like the video said It is all about the words you choose to use. Something can have the same meaning, but it is the words you use that add power to what you are trying to say. If you want help coming up with a different word ask me, Ms. Thaxter or Mr. Bonner
