3 Sentencing Decision is made about what your punishment will be
Made worse if you are a repeat offender 3 Strikes Three time felons usually get a much more severe punishment

4 Sentencing Guidelines
Laws that say how long judges should imprison people based on the crime they committed Limits the authority of judges BUT the judge is final decision maker on length of the sentence Racial implications: Crack v. powder cocain

5 Juveniles and Delinquents
Juvenile ~ Anyone under age 18 in most states that is not yet considered a legal adult Juvenile Delinquent ~ young people who commit crimes Textbook p. 375

6 Purpose of the Juvenile Court
Primary goal is to rehabilitate or correct a young person’s behavior Juvenile courts handle two types of cases: Neglect Delinquency Juveniles do NOT have the right to jury trials Judges attempt to keep proceedings and the identity of juveniles secret Textbook pp

9 Restorative Justice Aim is to focus on healing the victim
Offenders reflect on their act and focus on its effects on those who were hurt by it Less focused on punishment Punishment can cause the offender to feel victimized by the system; punishment therefore can get in the way of healing

10 Writing Prompt Write a letter to Dr. Logan, the Superintendant, or a Board of Ed. Member Address the following issues: Is the disciplinary system at Hillside effective? Why or why not? Would Hillside benefit from a peer jury and restorative justice program?
