PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND HEALTH Validation of three Android Wear smartwatches (Huawei Watch, Polar M600 and Asus Zenwatch 3) and Fitbit Charge for measuring amount of steps and time of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity Degroote Laurent, Verloigne Maïté, De Bourdeaudhuij Ilse, Crombez Geert 3. RESULTS 1. INTRODUCTION Amount of steps Smartwatches are increasingly popular with both consumers and researchers Function to track physical activity and sedentary behavior using various variables such as amount of steps, minutes of physical activity, energy expenditure, heartbeat,… Consumers attach great importance to what is stated about their activity level by these devices Are these devices accurate? r = 0,885 p < 0,001 r = 0,847 r = 0,892 Huawei Fitbit Asus Polar AIM Investigate the criterion validity of these devices in free living conditions for measuring: Time of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) Amount of steps Sample Measures Criterion (concurrent) validity: Huawei Polar Asus Fitbit Criterium = Actigraph GT3x+ VS Participants wear 2 watches at the same time (on the wrist of the non-dominant hand) in combination with an Actigraph (on the right hip) For 2 consecutive days during wake time (no water-based activities) All participants wear all 4 watches (2 times 2 days) All possible combinations of watches are made 2. METHODS r = 0,757 p < 0,001 36 healthy participants (20-65 years) 18 male Physically active (n=9) Physically inactive (n=9) 18 female Time of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity Huawei Fitbit r = 0,615 p < 0,001 r = 0,547 r = 0,477 r = 0,385 Polar Asus 4. CONCLUSION All four watches show high validity for measuring steps. For measuring MVPA validity is less high: Asus Zenwatch 3 shows low validity. Polar M600 and Huawei Watch show moderate validity and Fitbit Charge is the only one showing rather high validity for measuring MVPA. Contact @BSW_UGent
