Today’s Agenda…9/28 Bellringer: Describe the physical properties of a basketball. Notes on Properties of Matter Venn Diagram on Solids, Liquids, and Gases
2
Properties of Matter Study Pack #4
3
Today’s Goals… I can describe the states of matter using their physical properties.
4
What is matter? Anything that has mass and takes up space
Doesn’t have to be visible! Air is matter!
5
States of Matter Solid Liquid Gas Plasma
6
What is matter made of? All matter is made up of tiny particles
The particles are constantly moving How the particles are arranged and how they move determines the state of matter
7
Solids Shape: Definite shape Volume: Definite volume
stays the same no matter what container it is in Volume: Definite volume takes up the same amount of space no matter what container it is in
8
Solids Particle Arrangement: particles are packed closely together
Not very much room to move Particle Movement: particles are vibrating in place Picture
9
Liquids Shape: No definite shape; takes on the shape of its container
Volume: Definite volume takes up the same amount of space no matter what container it is in
10
Liquids Particle Arrangement: particles have more space between them than solids Particle Movement: particles are free to move around each other; liquids flow Picture
11
Gases Shape: No definite shape; takes on the shape of its container
Volume: No definite volume; takes up all the space in the container
12
Gases Particle Arrangement: particles are very far apart
Particle Movement: particles move very quickly in all directions Picture
13
More About solids, liquids, gases
14
Assignment Create a venn diagram to compare the properties of water in each of its phases…solid, liquid, and gas. Include characteristics such as shape, volume, and particle motion
