1 Labeling Requirements
KMCO MARCH 2017 Safety Meeting Topic OSHA 29 CFR

2 Why is Proper Labeling Necessary?
Correct labeling of drums or totes help identify material inside and any potential hazards associated with that material. Helps those that are handling the material choose the proper PPE. Helps first responders determine how to contain/clean up a spill. Helps determines disposal methods.

3 How to Label Check the SDS for the material you want to label.
Containers are to be labeled prior to any material being placed inside. Any other labels on the containers shall be pulled off or painted over to avoid any confusion. NFPA Labels can be found in both of the Old RX 1 & RX 2 control rooms and in the new control room. When filling out the information taken from the SDS Please use a paint pen or permanent marker. DO NOT use ball point pen as the ink will fade quicker than markers.

4 How to Label When labeling mixed material, compare the SDS of the mixed materials to determine which material is more of a hazard. Write on the NFPA label the numbers that correspond to the more hazardous material.

5 Waste ID Form

6 Importance of Segregation of Waste
Mixing non compatible materials can cause unwanted reactions. This can cause Fires and Toxic Vapor or Gasses. For the safety of the employees in the plant and the people living around the plant it is our duty to have good waste management practices. Segregation is one of those practices. The Waste ID Form was made to help with Segregation.

7 How Does the Waste ID Form Help?
It communicates information to anyone disposing of the waste what the waste is. It helps let the employee disposing of the waste know were it will go. Keeps employees from mixing any incompatible waste together. Just because you know what a waste was when you filled a hopper or container does not mean everyone else will when you drop it off for disposal. That’s why we need a form to ID the waste.

8 Where are the Forms Located?
Blank forms are located in the Open Storage Area Shed. This is located on the north side of the plant where the roll off boxes and hoppers are stored for waste. They are in a white mail box with a black and yellow label. Besides Blank forms, completed forms should also be placed inside mailbox.

9 How the Form Works? Fill out the top of the form with these items:
Name Title Date Unit/Tank Hopper# *Employee disposing of the waste will write down the Roll Off #

10 How the Form Works Continued?
Next fill out the what the contents of what is in the container. Enter the Chemical Name(s) Circle the items below “Chemical Name(s)” that describe the waste. Once the form is filled out then place the form back into the mail box from were you got the blank form. The employee disposing of the waste will place it in the correct roll off using the Waste Form ID.

11 Complete Waste ID Form

12 Material Dropped off in Open Storage.
Anything being brought and left in the open storage area need to be IDENTIFIED. This includes but not limited to: Hoppers Totes Drums Buckets and Jugs of material Pipes, Hoses & Valves Insulation Used Oil Pads

13 Material Dropped off in Open Storage.
Maintenance; Get with the generator of the Work Request to determine if equipment/material to be disposed of is contaminated. If material is contaminated and is waste have the responsible person fill out Waste ID Form. Non Contaminated piping can go in the scrap metal bins once any insulation has been removed. No chemical hoses are allowed in the Scrap metal bins.
