8-2.5 Summarize the role of South Carolinians in the course of the American Revolution, including the use of partisan warfare and the battles of Charleston, Camden, Cowpens, Kings Mountain and Eutaw Springs.

9 VI: The Battle of Fort Moultrie
Fort Moultrie was built on Sullivan’s Island. The fort was made of Palmetto logs, which allowed the cannon balls to sink into the soft palmetto logs. We know the Patriots won the battle because the British fleet withdrew. During this battle Sgt. Jasper become a hero by saving the fort’s flag. The Palmetto tree represents the palmetto logs of Ft. Moultrie.

10 X: The British Invasion of the State
The British decided to invade Georgia and South Carolina because they thought the Loyalists in the South were strong and they could end the war with Loyalist help Benjamin Lincoln commanded the Southern Department of the Continental Army. Sir Henry Clinton was the British commander in America. Two important towns that were taken by the British were Savannah and Charleston. In 1779, the Patriots failed to re-take Savannah. In Charles Town, the British made the Continental soldiers prisoners, the militia were given paroles, and the leading rebels were arrested and sent to prison. To keep South Carolina under control, the British set up military posts at Augusta, Ninety Six, Camden, and Georgetown.
