1 2 Corinthians 9:7 1 Corinthians 16:1-2
How are You Giving? 2 Corinthians 9:7 1 Corinthians 16:1-2

2 How Are You Giving? 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 “6 But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. 7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work”

3 How Are You Giving? 1 Corinthians 16:1-2 “1 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. 2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.”

4 God’s Commands Us to Give…
How Are You Giving? God’s Commands Us to Give… Three points stated in 2 Corinthians 9:7 Who - “Every man” How - With purpose of heart and cheerfully How not to -“not grudgingly or of necessity” Five points stated in 1 Corinthians 16:1-2 Why - Because of God’s “order” (command) So as to be ready for benevolent and spiritual needs When - “upon the first day of the week” Regularly, Consistently Who - “everyone of you” No Christians are exempt - cf. Acts 2:38 Manner - “lay by in store” Plan your giving and set your gift aside for the proper time How much - “as God has prospered” In proportion to how God has blessed you 2 Cor. 9:6 Who - Every Christian, individually is to give. How - Purposefully - to decide on your own before hand. With purpose of the heart. One who gives gladly (without reluctance). Cheerfully - the expression “God loves a cheerful giver” does not merely suggest that God endorses one who gives gladly as much as it implies that the desire for God’s love, which one knows will be bestowed on a person who gives cheerfully and should motivate a Christian to love others and, without reservation, be willing to share what he has with them. How not to - Suggest a sense of sadness or regret. Example: when you pay your taxes. Not under compulsion. 1 Cor. 16:1-2 When - Every week, be regular and consistent in giving. Who - Hekastos means every one. Every individual has a personal responsibility, based on his own opportunities, to give as he has been prospered. Manner - The word lay (tithēmi) is a technical term of commercial life meaning “put aside, store up, deposit”; its opposite meaning is to “withdraw what you did not deposit” (Arndt and Gingrich, 823). - The collection was to be kept in store (thēsaurizō), a term that means “to store up, save.” Paul is telling the Corinthians to save some funds for the poor saints in Jerusalem. How Much - The Christians should not determine how much to give to the Lord on the basis of the law of tithing (a tenth of all that is earned); rather, the gift should be in proportion to how much he has been prospered with no percentage having been legislated. Therefore, one who makes a large sum is expected to give more than he who makes a little. [Widow - Mk. 12:41-44 (two mites, or small coins, about 2/5 of a cent of US money, smallest coin]

5 Monetary Giving Review…
How Are You Giving? Monetary Giving Review… Why - Because of God’s command When - “Upon the first day of the week” Who - “everyone of you” - “every man” Manner - “lay by in store” - “cheerfully” How Much - “as God hath prospered” How Not To - “grudgingly or of necessity”

6 How Are You Giving? How Are You Giving?

7 Are you Giving IN or Standing with Jesus?
How Are You Giving? IN to Compromise? Some compromise their convictions Peter denied the Lord after saying he would not Mark 14:27-31, 66-72 Some are led astray with the crowd they are among Barnabas - Galatians 2:11-13 Some compromise with family members Herod - Mark 6:16-28 Some who once stood for the truth, no longer do Some give IN to peer pressure We must stand with Jesus come what may! Luke 11:23; 14:26-27 Are you Giving IN or Standing with Jesus? Are You Giving… Mk. 14:27-31, READ Gal. 2: But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed. 12 For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision. 13 And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation. Mk. 6: READ Lk. 11:23 - He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth. Lk. 14: If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. 27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

8 Will you Give UP or ENDURE to the End?
How Are You Giving? UP on Enduring Trails? Some quit & fall away in time of trail Like the rocky ground - they have no root - Luke 8:6, 13 Shallow in strength and knowledge of Christ & His church Only desire the “milk” of the word - Hebrews 5:12-17 Have no desire for perfection - Hebrew 6:1-3 Refuse to study vital issues - Acts 15:1-3 MDR, Fellowship, Modest Clothing, Attendance, Worldliness We must endure & not faint - 2 Cor. 4:8-9 Matthew 24:13; 2 Timothy 2:3; 4:3-5; Revelation 2:1-3 Will you Give UP or ENDURE to the End? Are You Giving… Lk. 8:6 - And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. 13 They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. Acts 17:11 - These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. Heb. 5: READ Heb. 6:1-3 - READ Acts 15:1-3 - READ 2 Cor. 4: Now ye are full, now ye are rich, ye have reigned as kings without us: and I would to God ye did reign, that we also might reign with you. 9 For I think that God hath set forth us the apostles last, as it were appointed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men. Matt. 23:13 - But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. 2 Tim. 2:3 - Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 2 Tim 4: For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. Rev. 2: Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; 2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: 3 And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.

9 Are You Giving… OVER to the Opposition?
How Are You Giving? OVER to the Opposition? Some Join Hands With The Enemy Only two sides, God or the Devil - Matthew 12:30 Matthew 6:24; Matthew 7:13, 14; James 4:4 Judas Iscariot sided with the enemy Matthew 26:20-25, 47-50; Matthew 27:3-8 Judas, the Lord’s disciple, betrayed Him with a death kiss Luke 22:48; John 18:2 Many have become turncoats & deserters They have the “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” mentality Must not “draw back” - Heb. 10:38, 39; Rom. 1:28 Are You A Faithful Servant or a Deserter? Are You Giving… Matt. 6:24 - No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Matt. 7:13, 14 - Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: {strait: or, narrow} 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Jas. 4:4 - Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. Matt. 26:20-25, READ; Matt. 27:3-8 - READ Lk. 22:48 - But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss? CF. Jn. 18: And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples. 2 Pet. 2:22 - But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire. Heb. 10: Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. 39 But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul. Rom. 1: And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; 29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents 31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

Psa. 119:2 - Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart. Vs With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Vs Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart. Vs I intreated thy favour with my whole heart: be merciful unto me according to thy word. Vs The proud have forged a lie against me: but I will keep thy precepts with my whole heart. Vs I cried with my whole heart; hear me, O LORD: I will keep thy statutes. 2 Corinthians 8:1-5 - READ Eph. 1:3 - Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: 2 Thess. 2:16 - Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, Eph. 5:20 - And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. Acts 17: And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: 31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the.
