1 FOLLOWING THE ASTRONAUTS

2 INTRODUCTION In this activity you are going to:
Find out more about the Apollo missions to the Moon Use Google Moon to calculate the distance travelled in one EVA (Extra Vehicular Activity) Calculate how much time the astronauts had to do their science experiments Branding

3 WHO STUDIES ROCKS AS A JOB?
Geologist: A person who studies the rocks, soil and structure of a planet or moon Harrison Schmitt – Apollo 17 Collecting samples Branding

4 APOLLO 11 VIDEO

5 WHAT COULD THEY SEE? Branding
This short video zooms in to the Apollo 11 landing site on the moon, and then into a panoramic of the landing site Branding

6 SCIENCE ISN’T ALWAYS EASY!
Apollo 16 astronaut Charlie Duke falls over while driving a piece of equipment into the Lunar soil

7 TASK – EXPLORE APOLLO 15 EVA
EVA stands for Extra Vehicular Activities and describes any actions taken by astronauts outside of their spacecraft

8 ANSWERS 6A The astronauts drove a short distance to the west after Station 6 in order to sample a large boulder they had seen on their drive over. On closer inspection, Jim Irwin discovered that it was green! Both Astronauts were amazed to find colour on the grey Moon.

9 ANSWER 7 The astronauts were heading north towards Spur Crater when they noticed a white rock fragment sitting on a pedestal-like protrusion. After looking at it more closely, Scott said, “Guess what we just found! I think we found what we came for.” Sure enough, the rock was almost pure anorthosite – a piece of ancient Lunar crust!

10 ANSWERS - CALCULATIONS
Distance Covered = Approx m 9km per hour = 9000m per 3600 second Speed = 9000/3600 = 2.5 m/s Time taken driving = /2.5 = 4140 seconds 4140 seconds/3600 = 1.15 hours = 1 hour 9 minutes 0 seconds So time available for science: 7 h 12m - 1h 9m = 6h 3m
