Grade Level - Third Grade Subject - A visual journey into outer space and a study of the Earth and Moon Learning Objectives – Students will develop a basic knowledge of the moon and its relationship to the Earth including phases of the moon, gravity, atmosphere and how humans have traveled into space.

4. Our lesson is about traveling to the moon and what we will see along the way: a very unique and wondrous view of our own Earth and moon. 5. Lesson: A Journey to the Moon 1. It takes 27.3 hours for the moon the orbit around the Earth. 2. The moon is about one quarter the size of Earth. 3. The moon is made up of rocks and dust. 4. The moon does not have its own light. It reflects the light of the sun. 5. There is no air or life on the moon that we know of. 6. The moon has very little gravity.

7. Traveling Into Outer Space What is Nasa? In 1958, NASA was created. NASA's mission is to expand frontiers in air and space, to inspire and serve America, and to benefit the quality of life on Earth. NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. What Has NASA Done? From its start, NASA began to plan for human spaceflight. The Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs helped NASA learn about flying in space. This led to the first human landing on the moon in 1969. Right now, NASA is working to finish the International Space Station.

8. Astronauts landed on the moon during the Apollo space missions. The Lunar module carried the astronauts from the Apollo spacecraft to the surface of the moon. Six Lunar Modules landed on the dusty surface of the moon between 1963 and 1972. The first man landed on the moon in 1963. The astronaut’s space suit provides air to breathe. 10. On Earth, gravity is a force that is always pulling everything toward the center of the Earth. So no matter where you are on Earth all objects fall to the ground. The larger the mass an object has the greater the gravity. The Earth has a large mass and a strong gravitational field. The moon has less mass and less gravity. Because of gravity, you will weigh 6 times more on Earth than you would on the moon. Earth’s gravity also holds the atmosphere around the Earth. The atmosphere of the Earth is a thin layer which contains gases that make up the air that we breathe. Without gravity the Earth’s atmosphere would not exist. There is no gravity in outer space.
